11,000 and counting
There’s mixed feelings today in the ENV wildlife crime unit after hitting the milestone of 11,000 cases documented.
On the one hand, that’s 11,000 cases of wildlife crime that might otherwise have gone uninvestigated. But the flip side is that’s an enormous volume of wildlife crime being perpetrated in the first place.
Established in 2005 to facilitate and motivate public involvement in efforts to combat wildlife trade, the wildlife crime unit is tasked with improving the effectiveness of front line law enforcement agencies. A big part of their success is our toll-free wildlife crime hotline which is used by members of the public and ENV volunteers to report wildlife crime across Vietnam. On average the wildlife crime unit deals with 2.3 new wildlife crime cases per day.
